A floating offshore wind energy startup called Aikido is gearing up to launch its innovative new platform, the Aikido One, this fall. The company is supported by Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy, recently securing an additional $4 million in funding to advance its pilot project.

Key Features of Aikido's Technology

The Aikido One aims to tackle common industry challenges related to assembly and transport. With this new funding, Aikido plans to:

Sam Kanner, CEO of Aikido Technologies, emphasized the importance of commercializing floating wind technology by the end of the decade to meet decarbonization targets. He stated, "We believe that our technology suite represents a step change in reducing costs, simplifying logistics, and increasing throughput of floating wind systems."

Innovative Design Components

Aikido's unique design comprises three major components: the controller, platform, and turbine. For the pilot run, they will utilize a standard 2-megawatt turbine alongside the new platform. The semisubmersible platform is designed for efficient assembly without the need for welding in the final stages, significantly streamlining the process.

Notably, Aikido's platform has a 75% smaller footprint than traditional turbines, adhering to shipping industry standards. This design allows for better utilization of existing infrastructure in port areas shared with the shipping and oil and gas sectors.

Deployment Capabilities

The Aikido One can be deployed from approximately 80% of U.S. ports, including those with shallow water or blocked by bridges. Once floated into position, the platform requires only water ballast to unfold and deploy.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, new commercial wind turbines generate about 843,000 kilowatt-hours of clean electricity monthly, enough to power around 1,000 homes. However, a significant portion of wind energy potential lies in deep water areas, necessitating floating turbines like Aikido's.

The Bigger Picture

The International Energy Agency predicts offshore wind could yield over 420,000 terawatt-hours, vastly exceeding global demand. Aikido's focus on simplifying transport, deployment, and maintenance is crucial for accelerating growth in the wind power sector, joining several companies innovating in this area.

Kanner concluded, "We believe that our technology suite represents a step change in reducing costs, simplifying logistics, and increasing throughput of floating wind systems."
