Metronome has successfully raised $50 million in Series C funding, led by NEA, according to exclusive reports from Fortune. This funding round also saw participation from notable firms such as Andreessen Horowitz, General Catalyst, Workday Ventures, and several others, bringing the total capital raised by the company to $128 million. The valuation of the company remains undisclosed.

Founded in 2019, Metronome entered the market at a time when usage-based billing was not widely accepted. Co-founder Woody reflects on the challenges they faced, stating, "We were second-time entrepreneurs... usage-based billing wasn’t a thing." At that time, only a handful of companies, like AWS and Snowflake, utilized this model.

The landscape has dramatically shifted with the AI boom, transforming usage-based billing from a niche concept to a necessity for many leading companies, including Nvidia, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Databricks, who are now customers of Metronome. Woody noted that the AI wave has accelerated the shift towards usage-based billing in the software application layer, exemplified by products like ChatGPT that incorporate usage limits within their subscription models.

However, there is no universal approach to billing. Woody recognized this complexity early on, noting, "I literally have this spreadsheet of 50 different companies... they all use the same Legos, but they paint the Legos different colors." This insight highlights both the challenges and opportunities in the evolving billing landscape as companies seek to align value with their solutions.
