Six months post his tenure at Instacart, Gao has embarked on a new venture in the field of robotics with Dyna Robotics. Recently emerging from stealth mode, Dyna Robotics has secured a $23.5 million seed round of funding led by CRV and First Round Capital. The goal? To develop affordable, easy-to-deploy robots capable of handling tasks that are often considered dirty, dull, or dangerous—ranging from chopping food and cleaning toilets to folding laundry.

Robots that are Single Task Experts

Dyna Robotics aims to assist businesses such as restaurants, grocery stores, and dry cleaners by providing specialized robots. Unlike most companies in the physical AI sector, which focus on general-purpose robots or humanoid designs, Dyna Robotics is creating stationary robotic arms tailored for specific tasks. This targeted approach not only reduces costs but also positions Dyna as a unique player in the market, expected to offer robots at tens of thousands of dollars compared to others that may reach hundreds of thousands.

Dyna Robotics is currently in trial production, with plans to launch these robots within the next few months. By focusing on specific tasks, such as folding cloth, the company believes it can optimize robot efficiency, addressing the high demand for automation in industries facing labor shortages.

General-Purpose Robots Will Take a While

Co-founder Jason Ma, a former Google DeepMind engineer, shares Gao's vision of advancing robotics. Their focus is on developing expert-level AI models that can be quickly implemented in production environments, rather than waiting for the elusive general-purpose robots that may take years to realize.

The robotics market is increasingly competitive, with over 1,500 robotics startups reported globally. However, Dyna Robotics aims to differentiate itself by scaling production efficiently and addressing a pressing labor shortage in sectors like food preparation.

Gao notes that their biggest challenge lies in achieving reliable AI performance in real-world settings. With a current efficiency rate of 10-30% compared to human workers, Dyna Robotics is committed to improving this metric by honing in on single-task operations.

Based in Redwood City, California, Dyna Robotics has already grown to 30 employees. Gao, as a seasoned founder, is eager to prove that his success with Caper was not a one-time achievement, emphasizing that good engineering remains key to their future success.
